The developing story surrounding Neil Lennon’s future continues to move quickly.

In the know MailSport reporter Stephen McGowan has put some more meat on the bones when it comes to what the Celtic board are thinking.

McGowan writes:

The Parkhead boss faces crunch talks over his future this morning after a 2-0 home defeat to Ross County saw the SPFL champions knocked out of the Betfred Cup.

Celtic directors were last night considering their position amid expectations they will act today.

Granted more time to turn things around in the belief home games with Ross County, St Johnstone and Kilmarnock could spark a player reaction, yesterday’s defeat looks sure to be the final straw for directors under pressure to act. Lennon has made it clear he won’t resign. Due a year’s money if he leaves, he discussed his situation with major shareholder Dermot Desmond and Chief Executive Peter Lawwell on Friday.

It stands to reason after a difficult run of fixtures the board thought the club would begin to turn a corner against Ross County. Two wins in ten games with no signs of a positive reaction for the players is a concern nobody at board level can ignore.

The humiliation of a cup exit at home to Ross County looks to be the final straw, but as McGowan said, Neil Lennon will be due a years wage if he’s sacked as Celtic boss. The club will now have to dig deep to remove the manager and bring in somebody new.

We should learn more throughout the day.

The club released one statement last night — condemning the minority of idiots throwing missiles at players and coaching staff. A protest outside Celtic Park turned nasty as morons decided to take it too far.

Neil Lennon’s position looks untenable, it would be a massive surprise if he was in the away dugout during the clubs dead rubber game against Milan on Thursday.
