Celtic are closing in on the signing of Chelsea striker Shim Mheuka, with the highly-rated teenager undergoing a medical in London today ahead of a potential loan move to Parkhead.

The move has come out of nowhere as Celtic ramp up their business before the UEFA squad deadline tomorrow night.

The 18-year-old England Under-19 international is regarded as one of the brightest young talents at Stamford Bridge and has been keen to gain regular first-team experience away from Chelsea this season.

Mheuka enjoyed a remarkable campaign at Under-21 level last term, being named Premier League 2 Player of the Season after scoring 17 goals in just 17 appearances.

His performances have strengthened his reputation as a major prospect, with his electric pace and eye for goal making him a particularly attractive option for Celtic.

The forward is understood to be very highly rated within Chelsea and recently agreed terms on a new contract which will keep him at the Premier League club until the summer of 2033.

According to Sky Sports, Celtic are now hoping to secure his services on loan as Martin O’Neill looks to add another attacking option to his squad.

The potential arrival of Mheuka could also have implications for Johnny Kenny.

Bolton Wanderers remain interested in bringing the Celtic striker back to the club following his successful loan spell last season, and the Hoops have been considering whether to allow him to leave before the Championship deadline.

Kenny’s situation has been complicated by injuries to Kasper Høgh and Callum Osmand, which have left Celtic short of options in attack.

However, if Mheuka completes his move to Glasgow, it could give O’Neill the additional forward option required to sanction Kenny’s departure.
