Martin O’Neill admires one current SPFL star, but he could be set to sign elsewhere.

Supporters are still waiting for the club to officially announce any new signings. With pre-season already underway and 17 days of the transfer window gone, the frustration among the fanbase is only growing.

Tawanda Maswanhise has been linked with Celtic over the past few months, although there has never been an official bid from the Scottish champions.

The Zimbabwe international enjoyed an outstanding campaign at Fir Park and established himself as one of Motherwell’s standout performers. His pace and direct running suited their attacking style, while his return of 22 goals in 44 appearances underlined just how effective he was in the final third.

Those performances earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Year and inevitably attracted interest from elsewhere.

His Motherwell teammate Elijah Just has also been linked with a switch to Parkhead. The winger’s displays on the international stage have only added to the speculation surrounding his future.

Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill is known to be an admirer of Maswanhise after watching him closely last season. The forward offered a goal threat and looked capable of stepping up when Motherwell needed him most.

Despite that interest, Sky Sports reporter Christopher Reidy has stated that Celtic have not made any approach for the player.

That leaves the door open for clubs elsewhere to make their move.

Belgian side Anderlecht failed to meet Motherwell’s £3m asking price for Maswanhise in January and are expected to return with another offer this summer.

Whether Celtic ever intended to follow up their reported interest remains unclear, but if Maswanhise leaves for Belgium or another overseas destination without the club making a genuine attempt to sign him, it will inevitably raise more questions from supporters.

The need for fresh faces in O’Neill’s squad is obvious. With preparations for the new season already in full swing, fans are looking for action rather than more transfer links. Every passing day without additions only increases the scrutiny on the club’s recruitment.

With several stars expected to leave, including Daizen Maeda, the need for new faces is even greater.
