Former Celtic right-back Mark Wilson doesn’t think the Hoops should get too bogged down with goal difference, and that their current lead at the top of the table isn’t something they should be overly proud of.

Currently, the Hoops lead their city rivals on goal difference. The Celts did hold a significant seven-point lead earlier in the campaign, but that swiftly evaporated amid injuries and poor form.

With eight wins in the last nine, however, Celtic are on a resurgence. They have been quietly on a formidable run of form since mid-December, and are still critically top of the table.

Although Wilson thinks the Parkhead faithful will be happy with this, he doesn’t believe that it’s good to say that the champions are top on goals scored.

Speaking on Thursday’s Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, he said:  “I think the majority of fanbases will be quite content where they are.

“Four goals more scored – I don’t think that’s a great stat to say we’re top of the league because of that. It’s really down to points.

“It’s too early in the season to be concerned about goal difference.”

Although goals scored are the deciding factor at the minute, points will likely separate Celtic and their closest rivals come the end of the campaign. Goal difference hasn’t decided a title in Scotland since 2003, putting testament to how rare such a transpiration is.

Wilson doesn’t think it should be coming into the Hoops’ minds yet however as time goes on and if the gap remains as tight as it is in a few months, it may well come into play.
