Martin O’Neill has admitted he is still hopeful Celtic can add to their squad before the domestic transfer deadline tonight.

The Europa League registration deadline has already passed, but the Celtic boss remains keen to bring in another addition if the right opportunity presents itself.

The Hoops managed to complete a flurry of deals before UEFA’s cut-off, adding Sam Johnstone, Shim Mheuka, Landon Emenalo, Joel van den Berg and Jordan Lotomba to O’Neill’s squad.

One notable absentee is Gvidas Gineitis.

CeltsAreHere exclusively revealed that Celtic’s move for the Torino midfielder had collapsed, with the Lithuania international not expected to arrive at Parkhead before tonight’s 5pm domestic deadline.

The fact that Gineitis would not be able to feature in the Europa League if signed today is understood to be a significant factor, with the midfielder keen to play European football. Celtic failed to meet Torino’s asking price, despite the gaffer pushing hard. We are led to believe that O’Neill was left unhappy with the failure to land the player.

Despite that deadline now passing, O’Neill insists Celtic will continue to look for opportunities before the domestic window closes.

“Even if they miss the European deadline, if there is a possibility of getting someone else in, I would definitely want to do that if we can,” O’Neill said.

“When I came in in January I ended up promising one of the players that we brought in to the squad and then I had to tell him he couldn’t be registered and he nearly took the bus home.

“I had to tell him that I hadn’t realised, because there’s only X number you can do, you’ve got your Scottish contingent, then you’ve got a few changes that you can make.

“Honestly, I just didn’t know that. And really sometimes the people who are signed to the football club, who belong to the football club permanently, maybe they deserve first shot.” [RecordSport]

Celtic now have until 5pm tonight to complete any further domestic business.

O’Neill has already overseen a major overhaul of his squad during the window, but the Hoops could yet have one more piece of business to complete before the deadline.
