It would be a “major surprise” if Celtic manage to complete a deal for top midfield target Gvidas Gineitis after closing in on two other additions.

The Hoops are understood to be closing in on deals for Oliver Sorensen and Joel van den Berg, with both players having completed their medicals yesterday before travelling to Glasgow.

Sorensen is poised to join Celtic from Parma on a season-long loan, with the deal understood to include an option to make the move permanent.

The 24-year-old Danish midfielder would add further depth to Martin O’Neill’s midfield options.

Celtic are also set to complete a deal for PSV midfielder Joel van den Berg, with the Netherlands Under-19 international arriving in a deal worth around £3.5million.

Both moves are well advanced and appear close to completion.

That made Celtic’s renewed interest in Gvidas Gineitis particularly intriguing.

The Torino midfielder has been a top target for the Hoops throughout the summer, with Celtic viewing him as a potential replacement for Arne Engels following the Belgian’s £22million move to West Ham.

Reports emerged that Celtic had submitted an improved bid for the Lithuania international after Torino lowered their asking price.

It made sense for Celtic to go back in and test the waters, particularly with their preferred target potentially becoming more attainable.

However, David Friel of The Sun has reported that it would be a “major surprise” if Celtic were to land Gineitis on top of Sorensen and Van den Berg.

With the two midfield deals already so advanced, a third major addition in the same position now appears unlikely.

That does not completely rule out a late move for Gineitis, particularly with Celtic having maintained their interest in the 22-year-old for so long.

But as things stand, it would certainly be a surprise to see the Hoops complete all three deals.

Celtic’s transfer picture should become clearer over the next 12-15 hours, with it being deadline day in several European countries. That could have a major bearing on potential outgoings at Parkhead as the club finalise their squad for the remainder of the campaign.

Celtic have until Wednesday night to confirm their Europa League squad, while the SPFL transfer deadline does not close until Thursday.

At the moment, Sorensen and Van den Berg look set to be the latest additions to O’Neill’s midfield.
