Celtic are “expected” to complete a deal for Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis before the transfer deadline, according to The Herald’s Stephen McGowan.

The Hoops have been working on a move for the Lithuania international and are now understood to be close to reaching an agreement with the Serie A club.

McGowan reports that a deal is expected to go through, with Gineitis valued in the region of £9million.

The midfielder was in Torino’s starting line-up last night as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Monza.

Despite Celtic’s interest, Gineitis remained involved with his current club as negotiations continued behind the scenes.

Celtic have been keen to strengthen their midfield following the departure of Arne Engels to West Ham, with Gineitis identified as one of their preferred targets.

The Hoops now face a race against time to get their remaining business completed.

Celtic have until 11pm tonight to register new signings for their Europa League squad, meaning any deal for Gineitis would need to be completed and the relevant paperwork submitted before then if he is to feature in European competition.

The domestic transfer deadline is slightly later.

The SPFL window does not close until 5pm tomorrow, giving Celtic additional time to complete domestic transfer business.

The later deadline is due to five SPFL matches taking place tonight, with the domestic window remaining open until after those fixtures have been played.

The Hoops’ immediate priority is getting Gineitis and their other additions registered for the Europa League before the 11pm cut-off.
