Celtic are targeting a left-back before the transfer window closes on Thursday, with Martin O’Neill keen to add competition for Kieran Tierney.

The Hoops are already working on additions in midfield, with a deal for Gvidas Gineitis also being explored, while a new striker is expected to arrive.

However, left-back remains another position Celtic are looking to strengthen – and time is running out to get a deal over the line.

CeltsAreHere revealed last night that Celtic have made an approach for Feyenoord defender Jordan Lotomba.

Talks have taken place over the 27-year-old, who is out of contract next summer, with a loan move understood to be one of the options being explored.

The approach comes as Celtic look to provide competition for Tierney, who is the only senior left-back at the club.

Tierney will miss Wednesday night’s meeting with Aberdeen through injury but could be available again when Celtic travel to St Mirren on Saturday evening.

Shaun Maloney took media duties ahead of the Aberdeen clash and admitted Celtic know they need to strengthen the position.

“I think we hope so. I think that position we have known about since Marcelo Saracchi left us at the end of the season,” Maloney said.

“I think Martin spoke already that he would have liked him back.

“I think that is a position that we have really needed to fill and with the right type. So yes, we need the right profile of player in there.

“I think Kieran started the season really well. I think you are never quite sure how this season is going to go with all the World Cup guys because it is such a short break.

“We all have that sort of thought. Kieran has been really good but I think we always need that back up in that position.

“We need somebody to keep challenging KT. KT has been really, really good this year. But we do need that position filled pretty quickly.”

With the midfield additions progressing and a striker also expected, Celtic now have several pieces of business to complete before Thursday’s deadline, but really, Wednesday at 11 pm is the real deadline. That’s when players must be registered for the Europa League squad.
