Celtic are scrambling to get as many as six deals over the line as they enter the final 36 hours of the transfer window.

The Hoops are already out of the Champions League and are now working frantically to strengthen Martin O’Neill’s squad before the deadline.

Oliver Sørensen’s loan move from Parma, which includes an option to buy, was confirmed yesterday.

But Celtic are hoping to go again today, with deals for Gvidas Gineitis, Joel van den Berg, Sam Johnstone, Chelsea teenager Shim Mheuka and left-back Landon Emenalo all in the pipeline.

The Hoops are also looking to strengthen at right-back and have made an approach for Feyenoord’s Jordan Lotomba.

CeltsAreHere understands the Swiss defender could potentially be available for nothing, with add-ons and a percentage of any future sale potentially forming part of an agreement.

It would be another major piece of business for the Hoops on a frantic day.

The sheer volume of deals being worked on at the last minute will raise questions, particularly given Celtic’s Champions League exit to LASK.

The Hoops surrendered a 4-0 aggregate lead in Austria to lose 5-1 after extra time, ending their hopes of reaching Europe’s elite competition.

Had the majority of this transfer business been completed several weeks earlier, Celtic could have entered the LASK tie with a significantly strengthened squad.

Instead, the club are now scrambling to rebuild after the damage has already been done.

That will be a frustration for Shaun Maloney, who has been involved in the coaching set-up under O’Neill, although he accepts that late-window business is part of the reality of football.

Speaking to the media ahead of tonight’s visit of Aberdeen to Celtic Park, Maloney admitted he would have preferred the new arrivals to be in much earlier.

“As a coach, you want them in as early as possible,” Maloney said of signings to the Herald.

“I think in an absolute ideal world, you’re probably in this position reacting to injuries.

“But I think that’s also the reality that we live in. I think we’d had about 40 training sessions before Haissem Hassan, Kasper Hogh and Mika Baur were in.

“So you want them as soon as you can. But sitting here now, it’s the reality of being a manager or assistant, you have to adapt to how the window plays out.”

Celtic now have precious little time to get their remaining deals completed, with the club facing a frantic few hours to get their business over the line before UEFA’s deadline tonight at 11 pm.
